The book deals with smooth dynamical systcms with hyperbolicbehaviour o f trajeclories tilling out "large subsets" of the phase space.Such syslcms lead to complicated motion (so-callod"chaos"). Thebook begins with a discussion of the topological manifestations ofuniform and total hyperbolicit),: hyperbolic sets, Smalc's Axiom A,structurally stable systems～ Anosov systems, and hyperbolic attractorsof dimension or codimension one. Therc are various nlodifieationsof hyperbolicity and in Lbis conuection the properties of Lorenzaltractors, pseudo-analytic Thurston diffeomorphisms, andhomogeneous tlows with expanding and contracting foliations areinvestigated. Thcsc last two questions are discussed in the generalcontext of the theory of homeomorphisms of surfaces and ofIlomogeneous flows. |
